‘In and out of the frame’ was the title and theme for our first exhibition, at Jack House Gallery, a contemporary gallery situated on the High Street in Old Portsmouth, a short walk from Portsmouth Cathedral and the Dockyard. We wanted to create a show that would demonstrate (and celebrate!) our shared approach to the making process, whilst focusing on different aspects of materiality and making. In different ways, each of us embraces experimentation in our individual practices, combining individual methods with unexpected techniques and materials.

‘Lost in Time’ by Consuelo Simpson

‘Pumping Station (portrait)’, ‘Layers of Time’ and ‘Pumping Station’ by Sarah Mander

‘Vessel 2’ by Kay Senior

‘Collaborate with my Uncle’ by Sarah Mander

Wall reliefs: ‘Kindred’, ‘Spirit’ and ‘Kindred Spirit’ by Sinclair Ashman

The show featured print, paper, ceramics, fibres and found objects, made into 2D wall-hung works and 3D sculptural pieces. Paper sculptures sat alongside framed ceramic pieces and wall mounted prints. Through an exploration of colour, line, texture and surface, we showed works that pushed the boundaries and expectations of our chosen media. Some works deconstructed elements of printmaking, and there was an emphasis on surface decoration in ceramics. Some collagraph plates were exhibited as works in their own right, whilst paper and ink took on new association with found objects and materials. Throughout, references were made to a sense of place, memory, time and landscape.
